Bridges

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is used to replace a missing tooth with an artificial tooth which is supported and held in place by an adjacent tooth or teeth. The supporting tooth or teeth need to be crowned, and the artificial replacement tooth is connected to the crown and therefore rigidly held in the desired position. In this way the false tooth literally bridges the gap that is caused by the missing teeth.

Unlike a denture, a bridge is fixed in the mouth. It is therefore very important to maintain good oral hygiene so that the bridge and the surrounding teeth and gums can be effectively cleaned to prevent problems with such as decay and inflammation.

Sometimes, the artificial tooth can be fixed in place by a metal wing which is cemented to the back of the supporting tooth. This is a good medium term option and is know as a Resin Retained Bridge.
